When Shoes Become a Work of Art

If it is a certainty that the shoes are primarily created for walking purposes, the Israeli designer Kobi Levi prefers to transform them into works of art. He makes with his own hands wearable sculptures in his studio in Tel Aviv. But what is Lady Gaga waiting for?

Coffee flowing down stiletto heels, colorful birds designs, a shoe taking the form of a chair, of a banana or of an elephant. There is nothing too extravagant for a young graduate of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design of Jerusalem. In fact, Kobi Levi in not afraid of anything, especially not of bad taste. He claims finding his inspiration in everyday objects, which is obviously true if you take a look at the models he has already created.

The “shopping trolley” shoes seem to be the result of a visit to the supermarket. The slide-shoes might have been inspired by a passage by a kindergarten or by an amusement park for children. Nevertheless, we remain speechless in front of the optical effect of the “chewing gum” shoes.

Therefore, there is no surprise  that we can find his work more often at exhibitions rather than in a shop window: it’s art, not consumable products! Who would not consider it art to have a plait of blond hair coming down from her ankle as it is the case with Blond Ambition collection issued in 2011 or a bended leg as heel. Actually, with the Blow collection of 2010 the whole shoe takes the form of the human body.

Yet while at first glance they seem particularly uncomfortable, it appears that they have technically been made to be actually worn. For women used to very high heels, they bring the same walking experience. Now he is preparing is future menswear collection and we will soon see how the masculine sex inspired the Israeli shoes artist.
